Fallen Aces: Getting Up Close & Personal
Summer Game Fest just wrapped up over the weekend, and I was there checking out so many amazing games. But, that doesn’t mean I didn’t have time to check out other events and showcases too. The Guerilla Collective showcase took place on the Thursday before Summer Game Fest’s annual showcase, followed by an in-person event to check out tons of great indie games shown during the livestream. Over the next few days, I will highlight some of the games I saw there and why I’m excited about them.
First up, is Fallen Aces. This action-heavy, noire FPS puts an emphasis on improvisation, as the world is littered with objects the player can use creatively to fend off threatening mobsters. The game caught my eye immediately with its dedicated comic-book art style and fast-paced action.
I tried the demo at the Guerilla Collective Showcase in Los Angeles, and if you’re interested, the demo is available for free on Steam right now. I was lucky enough to get a more enhanced experience though, as a wise guy stood over my shoulder holding a metal pipe the whole time. Though if that’s normal for you when you play video games that’s ok too. I don’t know your life.
I met with a few developers who were all dressed up in full suits and accessories, like the previously mentioned metal pipe. Thankfully it did turn out not to be a real metal pipe, but it looked convincing enough.
The demo started off with a quick comic-book intro. The protagonist gets an anonymous call warning him of the group of thugs entering his apartment building right now. Then it was off the races. I punched, kicked, and fire extinguished my way out of the building and onto the streets, where things only got more chaotic. A car driving by fires a gun at me before crashing into a fiery explosion that blocks my exit.
I’m looking forward to trying more of the demo during Steam’s current Next Fest because I’m sure there’s a lot more to experience. It’s not just because I learned after playing that I could have grabbed the banana off the table and used it to trip someone. That’s just something I HAVE to do.
What do you think of Fallen Aces? Does this look like a game you’d be willing to try out? If you do, leave a comment letting me know what you think, and don’t forget to add Fallen Aces to your Steam Wishlist to help out these creative indie developers.
I’ll be back with more exciting indie games from my time with at the Guerilla Collective Showcase, Summer Game Fest, and Steam Next Fest too, so make sure to check back tomorrow for more recommendations.
